In the past year - and especially in the last six months - we’ve seen major shifts in how readers arrive at news. Top U.S. news sites have experienced traffic declines of 15–20% year-over-year, with some publishers reporting sudden monthly drops of up to 25% after their content began appearing in AI-generated summaries. Travel sites, which rely heavily on informational search queries, have seen search referral drops of around 20%. Click-through rates on search results with AI answers have fallen by double digits, and zero-click behaviors now dominate informational queries. While AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity have begun sending a small stream of traffic back to publishers, it is only a fraction of what has been lost. Publishers are responding with urgency - through lawsuits, licensing experiments, and new audience strategies - but the underlying trend is clear. Without structural change, AI-driven content consumption will continue to erode the referral traffic that news publishers depend on, forcing the industry to evolve in fundamental ways.
